Soft drinks, heartburn. How do carbonated soft drinks impact heartburn? Can carbonation cause heartburn? Carbonated soft drinks often contain other harmful ingredients to heartburn sufferers. The effects of the carbonation itself are less clear.

Tip: Carbonated soda causes heartburn. There are multiple reasons why this might happen.

Tip 2: The carbonation, or the acidity, could cause this. Often soda has high acid content.

Carbonation. To begin, we look at an abstract of a medical study from Italy. The study examined the evidence of carbonated soda's effect on heartburn. There is no clear association between carbonated beverages and heartburn in the population.

Some surveys showed a weak association between carbonated beverages and gastroesophageal reflux disease. The methodology employed was often inadequate and overall the evidence available on this topic is contradictory.

Carbonated beverages and gastrointestinal system

The researchers note that other data indicates an association, but some of the medical studies were possibly flawed. This deals only with the carbonation itself. Carbonated beverages might cause heartburn because of other ingredients.

Reasons. There are reasons why soft drinks might cause heartburn. These are separate from the possible issue with carbonation. Soda might contain orange juice, which is a known trigger for heartburn symptoms.

Mountain Dew is a product that contains orange juice in some formulations. Drinks that contain lemon juice, such as some clear carbonated beverages, or grapefruit juice, such as Sprite, cause heartburn.

Lemon and Grapefruit

Soreness: If your esophagus is sore from heartburn, it is possible that the carbonation could irritate your esophageal tissue.

Diet soda and heartburn. It remains controversial whether diet sodas might actually cause people to gain more weight. Being overweight is a known risk factor for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and heartburn symptoms in general.

Dr. Pepper is one of my favorite drinks. I drink it rarely now because of its sugar content. One problem I had with Dr. Pepper is heartburn. It seems to cause heartburn for me perhaps even more than most other similar carbonated drinks.

Note: Dr. Pepper causes heartburn because of its carbonation and acidity. It is often a bad choice for heartburn.

Carbonated drinks tend to add pressure in the stomach due to the expansion of the bubbles. This in turn leads to the esophageal sphincter muscle being more likely to open. When this opens, you will get acid reflux.

Acidity. Soft drinks like Dr. Pepper, Coca-Cola, Mountain Dew, Pepsi and many others contain a high level of acidity. This is why Coca-Cola is sometimes even used as a cleaning agent.

For those with acid reflux or GERD, acidity is known to cause the esophageal sphincter to open and allow acid to leak into your esophagus. It is not entirely known why this occurs.

Tip: Dr. Pepper is best used in moderation. It has a high sugar, unless you have Diet Dr. Pepper, and it doesn't add much nutrition.

And: In this case, it may be best to be careful with it regardless of how much heartburn it causes.

Summary. We explored the issues surrounding heartburn symptoms and carbonated beverages such as soft drinks and Dr. Pepper. Medical data do not indicate a strong cause and effect relation here.

But: Other factors in carbonated beverages can certainly make them a poor choice for people who experience heartburn.
